Invisible disabilities: New addition to kpfilms.com removes barriers for visitors

This week the world is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Invisible Disabilities Week, which sees us announce the addition of Recite Me to kpfilms.com to improve digital accessibility.
An estimated 1.3 billion people experience some form of disability; that’s 16% of the world’s population or 1 in 6 of us . Many disabled people self-identify in different ways but with an estimated 70 – 80 per cent having invisible disabilities – one that is not immediately obvious – it is vital we do more to make digital accessibility more inclusive.

Recite Me assistive toolbar for digital purposes
Traditionally, websites like ours have been hard to navigate, read and interpret for many. As we strive to make kp more welcoming for customers and colleagues, we recently partnered with Recite Me – a cloud-based web assistive technology solution that bridges the gap between accessibility and usability.

With screen reading functionality, multiple reading aids, customisable styling options, and an on-demand live translation feature, Recite Me will benefit web visitors who require online reading support, and those who prefer to listen to information instead of reading it.

By promoting inclusivity through personalisation, those who are neurodivergent, visually impaired, physically disabled, or have varied linguistic needs, can now access our website in the way that is best suited to them.

The toolbar gives control to web visitors as they can manage how they view and interact with content to suit their individual needs. Each of the accessibility features can be used individually or combined to make multiple adjustments for ultimate ease of use, and include:
  • Web page translation into 100+ languages, many with speech.
  • 35 text-to-speech voices with highlighters to enhance reading comprehension.
  • On-screen text magnifier to assist users with visual impairments.
  • Audio generator to convert text to audio files for offline listening.
  • Screen mask to block on-screen clutter, letting readers focus on text being read.
  • Web page simplifier to remove distracting content for easier reading.
It is easy to get started:
  • You don’t need to download anything to enable Recite Me. To launch the accessibility toolbar just select the icon in the top right corner at kpfilms.com. This will then launch the toolbar, which will appear at the top of the page.
  • With so many ways to personalise your experience, we recommend you read the user guide, which outlines all the features as well as keyboard shortcuts.
  • Save your settings by creating an account.
  • Close the Recite Me toolbar by clicking on the icon marked "Close" to the right of the toolbar.
Recite Me works across different operating systems and mobile devices including Android, iOS, Linux, Mac, and Windows devices so we hope you’re able to give it a go.

Our culture at kp sees us treat colleagues with compassion and respect, but it isn’t always apparent what others may be dealing with and this is certainly true when it comes to invisible disabilities.

The more we build our understanding of invisible disabilities, the more we will be able to help improve the lives of people experiencing them. You can read short descriptions of some common invisible disabilities at: https://www.disabled-world.com/disability/types/invisible/

Together, we can all take action to improve the lives of others. By talking about tools like Recite Me and by developing our understanding of invisible disabilities, we’re helping remove barriers that may affect those around us. This can only be good for how we work together, and how we support our families, and it will also make our customers feel more welcome.
We’re committed to making kpfilms.com more accessible and welcoming to all and have recently integrated new software which allows web visitors to customise their digital experience. Other companies using it state those with print disabilities, such as dyslexia or mild visual impairments, concentration difficulties, and those with English as a second language find Recite Me particularly useful. We hope our visitors benefit from a more inclusive online experience, and I hope my colleagues do too.
